Analysis of Fantasy Football Survey by CraveOnline

CraveOnline, a website dedicated to men and features topics such as entertainment, sports and humor, recently published the results of a survey from its readers on fantasy football preference. The results reveal some interesting insights about fantasy owner behavior. But I would take the results with some bias as the results probably doesn't include results from female owners that populate the fantasy football world.

Your League

Yahoo and ESPN are the top games sites according to the CraveOnline survey. That falls in line with other estimates of web traffic. In addition, Yahoo touts itself as the #1 fantasy football site.

I would be cautious on this survey as it does not reveal other fantasy sites such as FOX fantasy football or MyFantasyLeague.com. Having said that, NFL.com coming in 3rd place is impressive since the game was only started in 2010 and now has leap-frogged CBS Sports. Football is going to be the golden prize for fantasy sports. Yahoo and ESPN still hold an advantage in that they can address all other fantasy sports that NFL.com will not cover.

Your Enemy

The social aspect of fantasy football is an important factor of why owners participate and do it with such passion.  The survey revealed that 3 out 4 owners would prefer to play with someone they know whether they are family, friends or co-workers. About quarter of the people would rather play with strangers offered in such things as in public leagues.

The survey asked what are owners preference of opponents, but it did not report on what is actually happening in leagues in fantasy football land. That statistic would be important with some of the weekly fantasy sites in addition highly competitive, almost professional leagues who require opponents to be pitted against someone anonymous.

Your Draft Day Prep

A third of fantasy owner are prepared to wing it when it comes to the draft as they claim to have spent zero time getting ready. The rest of the owners elect to spend some time in preparing their draft sheets to pick the right player.

A little more than a quarter of fantasy owners will spend at least a month going over the ins and outs of the league to insure that they get the best pick available. That means that when football season training camps starts, there are a legion of fantasy owners that are watching closely the battles that are occurring as well as the results of pre-season games to pick out any important morsel of information on players.

Your Double-Crossing Heart
Well apparently half of the owners surveyed would still cheer for their favorite team. Those are some strong owners in my view. If I had the choice whether my fantasy football wins or my home team,
I am afraid I would buckle and choose what's behind door number #1 on my way to the fantasy football championship.

The one factor that drives that for me, is that I only play in one league every year. For owners that play in multiple leagues, I could see them being able to cheer for their favorite team because there is only one win available for that game.
