The NFL is starting to see the potential of being able to target women as fans for its games, merchandising, and advertisement. Traditionally men have been the fanatics to follow the sports and spend on the sport. However, by now catering to women, the NFL can bring in additional revenue .
MY TAKE: The Fantasy Sports Trade Association estimated that women constituted 8% of the 33 million fantasy players that participated last year in the United States. Raising that percentage is going to be key to being able to continue to grow football as well as fantasy football.
A key question is which one comes first. Would their be more success with targeting women in fantasy football first and then translating that to more NFL revenue for tickets, sales, and merchandising? Or would their be more success with targeting women for traditional football first and then having that revenue spill over to fantasy sports?
Football has been around for over a century and it would interesting to note why the NFL would choose to target the female segment now. I would think that because of the social aspect and competitive aspect of fantasy sports, that the NFL would have greater success taking the fantasy football route first.
