Roger Goodell wants fantasy football to be about families, not about gambling

Roger Goodell says fantasy football not about gambling
NFL commissioner, Roger Goodell  appeared on CNBC to discuss a myriad of topics including the $765 million concussion settlement, increasing NFL viewership, and who the NFL commissioner really roots for in football games. Goodell also discussed fantasy football and the topics of gambling for fantasy sports.

Goodell sees fantasy football as a way to strengthen the NFL football experience and the brand. The NFL has tried to avert gambling as a whole and when it comes to fantasy football, Goodell would also categorize fantasy football in something other than gambling.

“Fantasy’s a different issue for us. We see families getting together, " Goodell says.  "It’s not about wagering.  They’re competing against one another.  And it’s a fun forum for our fans to engage in the game.”

This supports earlier statements Goodell made about how fantasy football can reinforce the family experience for the game.

FtSb Says:  The NFL brand is important to maintain for the commissioner. The league wants to project a wholesome family oriented sport to its consumers. Topics such as concussion could paint the sport as dangerous and thus diminish the attraction of mainstream consumers to the sport. Gambling is also another topics that the commissioner would wish not to juxtapose the NFL with. With this stance, we don't expect NFL.com to host daily prize leagues anytime soon. Thus that leaves a number of companies to pursue that market up opposed by the NFL.
